All-Arts, Sciences & Technology Camp (AASTC): logo redesign
UNC-Greensboro, Division of Continual Learning
2011

AASTC is a week-long summer camp for kids, offering exciting, one-of-a-kind courses and, for overnight campers, the experience of staying in a real college dorm! A new logo was requested to mark the 20th anniversary of the camp.

The challenge: the new logo needed to appeal to both boys and girls, ages 7-15. It must represent the arts, science and technology without emphasising one over the other, while reinforcing the Serious Fun tagline. The logo must be suitable for use in animations, on promotional items, in print and on screen. Overall, it was a tall order.

The solution: Robots, of course! I created two robot characters, one to represent the arts (a pencil-shaped boybot) and one to represent science (an erlenmeyer-flask-shaped girlbot), with the robot element representing technology. Robots appeal to boys and girls across a wide range of ages, and the anthropomorphic quality adds some necessary warmth and playfulness.
