Motion design is our strength at Supermassive, but we like to see ourselves as visual artists. Image makers. We were very happy to hear that Nicky Romero's Protocol Recordings sees us the same way, and approached us for the redesign of their label artwork.
Protocol Recordings is an international label with Dutch roots. As one of the industry leaders in the Dance scene they're constantly looking for new ways to inspire and challenge the status quo.
They asked Supermassive to help with that. They wanted a fresh and mature image, something different than the in-your-face design the EDM scene is known about. We developed a minimalist framework for the artwork and social media channels. The elegant design allows for the artwork itself to take the shine. For the artwork we aimed for a dynamic, colourful and organic look and feel. To achieve this we decided to leave the comfort of our desks and dive in the photography studio.
The artwork for 2018 is divided in three batches. For the first batch we decided to take a prism as the main subject. The way light refracts in a prism is an interesting phenomenon that creates endless opportunities for imagery. Stay tuned for the next round of artwork!
PRISM
For the first series we took a prism as our main subject. The way a prism breaks up the light is a fascinating phenomenon that can be captured in so many ways. After a day of experimenting in the studio, we had an extensive set of images with all kinds of amazing effects.

ICE
For the second batch we picked ice as the main subject. This proved quite a challenge, as ice behaves both very predictable (it melts) and unpredictable (it melts in weird ways). This caused a bit of a headache during shooting. The results were worth it though. The different patterns that were revealed in the melting process made for very interesting imagery.
MINERALS
For the last part of the series we chose to work with another natural element: minerals. The balance between rough or polished, translucent or reflecting surfaces created tiny macro worlds that we could capture on camera.
