Unheard - Scanography

Scanography (or Scanner Photography) is the process of using a flatbed scanner as a camera to capture digital images of three-dimensional objects.
Experimental efforts are included in this series by creating illusion of distortion and depth via moving subjects and adjusting the distance of subjects from the scanner in the progress of the scan.

Disregard

Disregard - The curtain hooks, symbolises the localism, of which Singaporean locals live their lives in the self-comfort and complete apathy towards non-locals, represented by the opaque blue shopping bag that hugs the hooks tightly.
Is it truly that rosy here?
Desire

Desire - What is under the bag of peace for the locals are actually the hidden fingers of the foreigners, desiring to attain even a little bit of localism in this country that they too live in. The red and distorted image carries the messy and unyielding energy of this issue.
Who will hear their pleas?
Desperation

Desperation - The desire and desperation comes from foreigners who have come far and beyond, leaving their homes in hopes to make a living and do their part in this society, to make this place their second home, yet finding themselves being viewed inadequately, barely even visible as a human being.
Is acceptance that unacceptable?
Defeat

Defeat - Behind the red fingers, lay these normal humans who are blocked out by local society, and eventually loses their determination to be part of this country.
Why does it have to be so difficult?
This series was an exciting experiment with the chance to learn and use such an unconventional method of photo taking. Below are a handful of other photos taken from this project. It was really interesting to find out that scanners do not read colours from screens, as shown in those with pictures on mobile phones. It was also very interesting to play with the blurry effect that comes with the depth of capture, and how lighting is a big factor in the process of scanning -- the photos taken in a well lit room gives the effect of a dreamy hospital environment.
