On the brink of extinction
Inspired by "Last chance to see", a book where Adams and Carwardine travel to various locations in the hope of encountering species on the brink of extinction, I myself dove into this wondrous part of the world that lies in the balance.
Their trip was part of a project by the World Wide Fund for Nature and British Sunday newspaper The Observer, sending well-known authors to remote places to seek endangered species and write articles for The Observer Magazine, to help raise awareness of ecological issues. With this project - a rush of wild, terrestrial animals - I aim to make my own contribution.
I started with a tactile study of animal skin, fur, volume, patterns and contours that reveal texture and used a technique I picked up from master of the pen & pencil, Alphonso Dunn: texture cubes. Leaf through all 5 in detail at the bottom of the project!
1. Texture cube: bear fur
2. Texture cube: gorilla hair
3. Texture cube: iguana skin
4. Texture cube: tiger fur
5. Texture cube: rhino skin
