Two-page magazine

Magazine interview

Objectives

Constructed a two-page magazine
editorial spread based on a personal interview of a working graphic designer.

Developed a page layout that helped readers quickly understand the
information in a concise way.

Role & Responsibilities

I collected research on how to design a successful page layout. Followed the magazine specifications for print. I chose a type that complimented the elements and used icons that most represented what the content was about. I used black and white color to create contrast.
Exploration
“Design can be art.
Design can be Aesthetics.
Design is so simple, that’s why it is so complicated.”
-Paul Rand
Discovery & Ideation

Inspired by many designers. The direction I took for the design was clean and simple, which made it easy to navigate. Due to this, a user’s interest wouldn’t suffer.
Challenges

Needed a way to help the readers quickly find things that they desired to learn more about.

The first concept on the right was a good way to include different types of information; however, the design looked cluttered. The other designs were more organized but needed negative space.

Designed many compositions and tried different techniques to further
improve the layout.
Solution

After brainstorming and drawing many compositions, I decided to go with the layout that had icons. The icons helped establish what each section of text would talk about.

Utilizing alignment and grouping
similar information, the unity and
negative space improved.

Used a sans serif font to make the text more modern and legible. The font chosen has square edges; therefore, it compliments the shape of the icons.
Conclusion

Over all, I am happy with how the two-page magazine turned out. Developed a unified and neat design.

The final design solved many problems. It is very easy to access the information. Using black ink the most, it saved printing costs.

If I was given a chance to fix anything, I would add more images and other
elements; this would help readers understand what the text is about.
