ILLUSTRATION PROJECT

This project will give an introduction and background on my 3 chosen designers/ illustrators and compare their work with mine in order to show how their work inspired my final illustrations.

JILL SANDER

Jil Sander, in full Heidemarie Jiline Sander, (born November 27, 1943, Wesselburen, Germany), German fashion designer and founder of the Jil Sander label, noted for her luxurious understated clothing and influence on minimalist fashion.
After graduating in 1963 from a textile-engineering school in KrefeldGermany, Sander worked for a time in fashion journalism, first at McCall’s magazine in the United States and then at Germany-based Constanze and Petra. She opened her first boutique, in Hamburg, in the late 1960s, selling her own creations alongside clothing by established European designers.
Sander launched her first collection in 1973. Early on she became known for designing refined, stylish work wear that was expertly tailored and typically made in luxurious fabrics. Her collections, with their neutral color palette and focus on simplicity and wear ability, stood in stark contrast to the brightly hued, highly embellished looks that would follow in the 1980's. Emphasis was on structure and shape rather than on ornamentation and decoration.

These are my own sketches created by hand, I then scanned them into the Adobe Photoshop (seen in the third image) to clean the edges and make the illustrations stand out more. I loved her technique of using effortless brush strokes thus creating an almost messy look, I attempted to incorporate this into my own illustrations.

JOSEPH LARKOWSKY

Joseph Larkowsky is a 21 year old Fashion Illustrator commencing his third Year on BA Fashion Illustration at London College of Fashion. Joseph has a very distinct style and uses select materials to give all his sketches the same look. His work has been seen in in multiple publications, numerous websites and with clients ranging from Drapers Magazine, Mappin and Webb, Oxfam and The Sanderson Hotel.

I loved the technique of adding exadurated eyebrows, this stood out to me immensely as it fits my quirky, edgy aesthetic. I decided that I would create the same effect with my illustration, by simply drawing then in with a thin paintbrush on Adobe Photoshop. i think that it gives the illustrations more character.
JESSICA DURRANT

Jessica Durrant is a freelance illustrator and art instructor from Las Vegas, Nevada who now resides in Atlanta, Georgia. Durrant specializes in fashion, travel, beauty and lifestyle illustration. Her work has graced the pages of magazines around the world from ELLE Brazil and Australia, Harper’s Bazaar Art Singapore, Marie Claire, Living Etc. and Elie Saab’s Light of Now Magazine. Clients include Target, Lancôme, Kérastase Paris, and Revlon UK. Harper’s Bazaar has named her one of 12 fashion illustrators to follow on Instagram for 2014 and 2015.

I love the 'no face effect', it's mysterious and draws attention to the illustration, I think that when too much is happening on the page, it distracts the viewer from the actual detail of the clothing.
1. Fitness for purpose. Why does the chosen work represent the best outcome of the options you could have developed?
The work was fit for purpose as the illustrators work was looked at with enough critical detail in order to ass certain aspects of their designs into my own work.
2.How does your work compare with the professional work you researched?
My work is similar to the work of the professionals as I have taken certain design details and incorporated them into my own work.
3.What were the technical constraints and difficulties you encountered?
The technical constraints and difficulties i encountered were not being able to make my work look as polished and professional as the professional work.
4.How could you have improved the process and outcome?
The process and outcome could have been improved by managing my time more efficiently, I could have also experimented more with my designs and illustrations to make my work look more presentable.
