'Winter Forest' is a mini painting from Gillies's latest collection of 2018. Reflecting on his travel and artistic research in Japan.

This little panelboard was actually bought in Japan and received some work on it while the artist was traveling in the Japanese Alps which inspired the scene, the picture was finished in Glasgow Scotland.

It was created using acrylic paints, salt, and graphite.
The painting has a coating of clear epoxy resin, giving it a high gloss finish. A surface the artist has intended for his works for many years, this is the first collection to receive the treatment.
The scene contains a misty backdrop in soft blues, jade, and whites.
A tree ridge in the midsection is defined with graphite trees with a bank of mist created with salt poured onto wet paint, then into the lower tree section.
The color tones are soft blues greens and whites giving the atmosphere of winter, yet the picture does not feel cold.
