Screenplay analysis questions - Inglorious Basterds opening scene
1. How does the action writing indicate Hanz Landa is playing mind games with LaPadite?
2. How does the action writing in the screenplay indicate who has control (or a lack thereof)?
3. How does the dialogue communicate information about the character speaking?

1) In the action writing of Inglourious Basterds, Hanz Landa plays mind games with LaPadite by making tiny queues in his actions to keep the situation on end whereas by using the objects around him or by conversational. He uses the glass of milk of his to create an atmosphere.Where he uses the loudness of hitting his glass on the table to assert his dominance indirectly because he’s able to make loud noises while LaPadite feels like he can’t. Hanz also sets up false actions to make LaPadite believe that he’s safe. By seeming to accept LaPadite’s answer, he sets up false sense that he doesn’t suspect a thing and that he’s been duped by LaPadite. Whether by using the atmosphere to his advantage or by making LaPadite believe he’s not suspicious, Hanz Landa plays dangerous mind games with the French farmer.
2) The action writing of Inglourious Basterds indicates who had control by adding how Hanz Landa and LaPadite are acting throughout the conversion with feeling. During the part where LaPadite starts worrying, Hanz seizes more control. The farmer’s cool head is now decomposing; slowly making LaPadite express obvious queues that he’s lying to Landa. Hanz’s control continues to overpower LaPadite. The script expresses his actions as very calm. By using the word “he continues” and “enjoys”, it shows how Landa has so much control over the situation that he leads it and can enjoy his milk as calm as ever. The action writing gives tiny switches of words that show who is in control in the situation and most of the time, Landa’s in control.
3) The dialogue of Inglourious Basterds communicates information of the character speaking whether by LaPadite’s love for his family or Landa’s manipulative personality. LaPadite shows his love for his family while telling an order to his daughter. LaPadite’s concern for his family is evident because he wants the daughter to take care of their mother and make sure she doesn’t show that their scared by running. Landa shows his manipulative personality and intent by seeming like he’s asking questions, but it is actually orders. Landa expresses a manipulative question. This is manipulative because it makes LaPadite feel like he might have some power by forming the sentence as a yes or no questions but in reality, yes is the only option LaPadite has. All this shows is LaPadite’s concern for his family and Landa’s manipulative personality are evident in the dialogue.
