About This Piece
The following series of web graphics and print posters were created at Firebelly to announce this year's call for submissions. The imagery and artwork photographed was meant to focus on the undiscovered and emerging nature of the artists featured in the show. In many cases, typography and lettering can be a quiet pursuit or considered a "labor of love." The absence of faces and recognizable people in the final announcement support this idea of unknown representatives and nameless heroes of our craft; they use their hands and skills to give language personality and persona. Basic geometric shapes framed the emerging hands, providing a subtle visual cue and hint at how each uppercase letter of the Latin alphabet is constructed. While the imagery is expressive, playful and symbolic of the many works on display for the duration of the show, the supporting information and details represent classic ideas and a straight forward and organized sensibility about typography and typesetting.
