Assignment 1: Intervention

-The goal of this assignment was to create an artwork that would be affect the surrounding area. My project consisted of snow that I formed into small barriers roughly halfway across the sidewalk. This intervention would make people walking along the sidewalk choose to walk around the barrier, step over it, or consciously destroy it by stepping on or through it. The result of my project did not align with my goal, and the snow ended up being shoveled away and no results could be observed from the impact of people walking on the sidewalk.
Assignment 2: Sound
-For this project we were required to set two times during a 24-hour period in which we would stop for half an hour and listen to the world around us. We would then use this information to create a sound piece representing our two half-hour periods and our experience during that time. My sound piece consist mostly of background noise such as running water, footsteps on a hard floor, the ticking of a clock. During my two half-hour periods most of the people in my house were either asleep or just waking up getting ready for the day, other sounds represent doing dishes and making a bed. Sound is something I personally have never experimented with before in the art realm, for me it was fun to create a piece in a medium I had never used before, but I also had a difficult time thinking about how I could create a piece about my time slots that weren't directly representational.
Assignment 3: The Magnificent Project
-The goal of this project was to create a project that we, as students, would be unable to reasonably create in the real world. My proposal piece consists of a large spherical ice sculpture of the earth placed in a building or public area, it would be roughly 800-1500 lbs and would sit in a metal bowl that is able to be heated. On the pedestal that the bowl sits on would be projected footage of garbage and recycling bins next to each other throughout areas of the city/town which the piece is in, the temperature of the bowl in Fahrenheit and Celsius would also be shown. Every time someone throws away an item that should be recycled, the temperature of the bowl is raised by one degree Fahrenheit. The temperature cannot go back down once it is raised. This idea literally represents the effects of global warming and puts the blame on the habits of humans as a whole and how we go about our everyday lives, it is also an attempt to make people more aware of how their actions affect the planet.
Assignment 4: The Magnificent Project - Continued
-For the second part of assignment 3, we were instructed to create an artwork based on your proposal project. Since my project was physically unfeasible for me to accomplish I decided to carry over the concept of the original proposal. My new piece is still very direct and cynical, only in a very different format. This is a 2 dimensional digital painting representing how humans are destroying the planet. As you can see in the picture the Uncle Sam poster is placing blame on the viewer directly and telling them to rethink their actions and be more mindful.
Assignment 5: Animating Inanimate Objects
-The goal of this assignment was to create a video in which you made an inanimate object "come to life." For my project I chose to use stop-motion animation in order to achieve an animated effect. The software I used is Wondershare Filmora. In my video I create a short story between two "cutie" oranges in which one oranges unwraps itself and starts to explore as multiple sections of orange, but soon gets smashed by a whole orange. This project was one of my favorites in this rotation.
Overall this rotation gave me the chance to experiment with media that I usually wouldn't think to incorporate into my art. It was great to get a taste of several different types of non-traditional media and to think outside the box as to what is achievable for us as students. This workshop gave me great tools to go forward into the art world more prepared, and has encouraged me to continue to work in alternate media.
