For this project I wanted to combine two of my favorite things, Kpop and stickers! Kpop is known for many things, but I focused on three elements: catchy songs, colorful mvs and amazing choreos. I selected 6 of my favorite kpop songs from different groups to create some fun and illustration-focused stickers.
It was really fun to choose a representative shot to pick the colors from. Kpop music videos are super colorful and the art direction is always polished no matter the size of the production. I kept in mind that the purpose for these illustrations was to print them as stickers, so I tweaked some colors so as not to get any surprises later.
Kpop songs have always really memorable choreos, but usually one dance move –or "Dance/Choreo point" as they call them– stands out. For this project and for the sake of coherence, I chose dance moves that involved hands. That way I could ensure the stickers would have a visual point that connects them all.
Since these are obviously very different songs and color palettes, I knew I had to find a way to make the 6 illustrations coherent but still remain unique to each other. I came up with the following system, inspired by badge design:
Considering I was combining typography and illustration, I selected a typeface that would work well with my style of illustration, Chrome Black. After that I made some sketches –lots and lots of them– until I landed on something I thought it fit the concept and was aesthetically pleasing. Overall, the illustrations mixed choreo points, some of the lyrics as well as parts from the music videos.
