A Google Chrome Extension
This is a project i did for school in a clas called "arts & computing". Me and my project friend implemented a Google Chrome add-on that gives the user an option of choosing the country and then filters the websites according to that country’s banned words on the internet. Furthermore, the application enables the user to enter his own banned words and makes the user see the webpage he is on with the words he chooses covered with a black line. The focus of our project is to show people how limited they are on the internet once they have internet censorship as opposed to reaching every information they need with just a click of their mouse.
The internet has become a growing source of entertainment and information while its contents started increasing rapidly as much as uncontrollably. Thus, the topic of "internet censorship" is discussed all over the world as some governments started to control or suppress the access to this vide variety of information. Taking these discussions into consideration, supporting the fact that internet censorship violates our rights of free speech and access to information is the main idea behind this project. We offer you a Google Chrome extension that gives the user an option of choosing the language and then filters the websites according to that language's banned words in the country which it is spoken. Currently, our extension gives users the chance of seeing the censorship on Turkish, Chinese and Pakistanese. Furthermore, the application enables the user to enter his own banned words and makes the user see the webpage he is on with the words he chooses covered with black squares. The aim of our project is to show people how limited they are on the internet once they have internet censorship as opposed to reaching every information they need with just a click of their mouse.
