We have one of the most unique and beautiful plant kingdoms right at our doorstep - the fynbos of the Cape is diverse, unique and beautiful once you've taken the time to spend time outside among the bushes and flowers. Each plant is uniquely adapted to its environment - the large area and weather patterns as well as its immediate environment, whether on a rock ledge, the shady part of the mountain or in a sandy patch.

This artwork only shows 4 different species of animal, but I still want to say that I want to accentuate our amazing biodiversity, not only in our own country, but our entire planet. Life is precious and worth respecting, honoring and protecting.

We think we are beyond the plants, ocean and our cellular makeup - spending our time in front of computers, in shopping malls and hiding away between four walls. But our soul yearns to be outside, we are made of the same stuff than the other animals of the earth, and we share our being with the plants and the trees of this planet. We become more happy when we reconnect. When we realize that we are - and live mindfully as an integral piece of - nature.

Wildness contained

Hidden within the work, barely visible, are the words 'life caged'. We try to control wildness and wilderness, not only in our environments, but also within ourselves. We are nature.
