Troubleshooting Common Kitchen Faucet Problems

Troubleshooting Common Kitchen Faucet Problems
Before you pick up the phone and call the plumber, check out this troubleshooting guide for replacing basic American Standard.kitchen faucet parts.

Low Pressure
Low water pressure is common in older homes. Most people notice low pressure when they’re in the shower. The water doesn’t flow as quickly as it used to and it takes longer to bathe. In the kitchen, low water pressure translates to more water, more elbow grease, and more time scrubbing the dishes. You can fix low pressure in the shower by replacing the shower head. In the kitchen, however, instead of replacing the entire faucet, check the aerator. The aerator is at the tip your spigot where the water comes out. A wire mesh inside the aerator traps large minerals and other deposits, stopping them from entering your drinking or cooking water. Over time, these deposits will build up and block the flow of water. Simply replace the aerator and enjoy clean, free-flowing water once more.

O-Ring
Leaks in your kitchen or bathroom sink are usually caused by a worn o-ring. An o-ring is a rubber circle used to seal seams inside your plumbing. Regular wear and tear, as well as chemicals and minerals in your water, will cause the o-ring to degrade and leak. O-rings can also dry out if the faucet hasn't been used for a while. To replace an o-ring, refer to the manufacturer for the size you need based on your specific faucet. Turn off the water main and remove the faucet spout to gain access to the old o-ring.

Water Hammer
Water hammer is another condition usually found in older homes. Also known as hydraulic shock, water hammer occurs when a surge of water running through your pipes is forced to change direction, diverting to another part of the house. It's commonly associated with larger appliances like the dishwasher. When you use these appliances, you’ll hear a loud thump as water hits the pipes. Over time, this pressure can cause a rupture in your plumping, costing you thousands of dollar in repairs and water damage. By replacing the water hammer arrestors located behind your dish or clothes washer, you can reduce the strain on your plumbing and eliminate the thumping noise.

With a little elbow grease and replacement American Standard kitchen faucet parts, you can save hundreds on costly plumbing repairs and labor costs.
