Book Cover Design
A project to create a book cover for Stephen King's novel 11/22/63.
The premise of this project was to work mainly with photography to capture a symbol to use for a book cover. The symbol is to be easily understood, but not overly obvious.
I chose to work with a wooden watch I own to symbolize time travel's integral part in 11/22/63. I initially took photos on a solid black or white background.
I decided these looked a bit boring and wanted more exciting backgrounds.
The images turned out okay, but the background needed to be more significant and related to the novel. I tried using dress shoes and even going to a diner (important setting in the book) to try to take advantage of better backgrounds. I liked these the least.
I tried to come up with some rough drafts from the previous 3 photo shoots.
Eventually, I got my hands on both a rifle brass and an old newspaper and got some photos that I actually liked. Here are a few of those drafts.
I used times on the watch that were significant. I also played around with the "portal" theme for the author's name. In the end, I chose the one that had the most vintage influences.
