Book Cover Project
As part of my final project for my Graphic Design Class I was required to create an appealing book cover for a well-known piece of literature of my choice. It needed to include a photograph I had taken of a single object that symbolized or characterized the work. I chose one of my many fedoras to represent F. Scott Fitzgerald's most famous work, The Great Gatsby.
My final cover for the novel The Great Gatsby.
I created many different versions after taking over 100 different photographs. Some of the photographs included throwing the hat into the air, placing it on a car engine, next to a tire, and on a white studio set that I quickly set up. I narrowed down my options and then began adding the text in Adobe Illustrator.
I tried to stick to fonts of the time that would help evoke both the drama and elegance of the 1920s rich and elite. Some of the font choices included: Baskerville MT Pro, Broadway,  Trade Gothic Next LT Pro, 20 db (https://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/20-db?q%5Bterm%5D=20db&q%5Bsearch_check%5D=Y). The final font choices I decided on were; Bodoni MT and Neue Haas Grotesk Display Pro.
I added an effect to the image Chalk and Charcoal. This graininess helped to add to the feel by exuding both the rush and excitement of the time like a newspaper. I then save the image as a jpeg and used a free mock-up to present my work. (Find it here: https://www.behance.net/gallery/37034189/Free-PSD-Paperback-Book-Mockup)
