BLOOD SPICES: THE TRADE THAT RULED THE WORLD

BLOOD SPICES: THE TRADE THAT RULED THE WORLD

The magazine used is Gather Journal, a recipe journal that explores different themes and topics with each issue. Some of these topics include women in media and summer movies. Recipes are created based on these issues, putting gastronomical spin on creativity.

For this assignment, I decided to bring Gather Journal out of its North American zone and into parts of a topic that are rarely discussed. Although we know why and how the spice trade changed the world, its impact on spice-growing nations are rarely discussed. In this issue, colonisation and bloodshed are given the spotlight. Violence and encroachment shaped the food consumed by the colonised and the colonisers, and this can be experienced with recipes that confront the palate.

The red is made up of a mixture of popular spices. The colour and texture is photographed and edited in such a way that it is reminiscent of metal rust or dried blood. Marks in the spice indicate desire and how invisible beings force their way towards their goal. The subtitle 'The Trade that Ruled the World' is a reference to the saying 'the empire on which the sun never sets'.
