How Lubalin Let Type Talk

Herb Lubalin: The King of Typography
A 5 Spread Book Project
Graphic Design 102: Image and Typography
This project was based on a famous graphic designer who inspires and influences the world of graphic design today. I chose Herb Lubalin as my designer because of his prolific work both in advertisements and typography. Lubalin was educated at Cooper Union and worked most of his career at Sudler and Hennessey, the company eventually becoming Sudler, Hennessey, Lubalin.
For this project, I really tried to delve into how Lubalin used type in an illustrative way rather than just to create plain words. In my book I used a lot of images of his designs that showed just how prolific
This project really pushed me to see how patterns and design tie together pieces of work that seem separate. By using repetition and playing with the opacity layers, I believe I created a cohesive and interesting book.
A unique individual, Lubalin worked extremely hard and said very little. The colorblind genius was an inspiration to many, and proved that if you put your mind to it and are given a little confidence, anything is possible.
I really enjoyed this project because it took me outside of my comfort zone and pushed my boundaries of what I thought I could do with graphic design. If I took away one thing from Herb Lubalin, it's not to look at letterforms as simply plain information, but to look at them as texture, illustration, and most importantly a vessel to further ideas and make them more interesting to the viewer.
