G E S T U R E S
My gestures develop in two separate stages. First, I draw quick studies of passing pedestrians in ink without looking at the paper. Later in the studio, I work with the tangle
of dynamic lines I have drawn and try to retrieve the essence of the individual. Each
study depends on chance and skill in equal measure as I later apply watercolor, allowing the medium to flow freely. I am amused by the expressive distortion, the abstract suggestion of form and movement, and the way color has a life of its own. Not all the images survive, but the ones that do convey my empathetic response to the endless variations of the passersby,
