Down At The Boozer

Down At The Boozer

Let me take this opportunity to introduce Mike Jury.  Mike is a member of the Essex Beardsmen, and was gracious enough to let me capture this shot as part of my charity project, *Moustachio Nut, back in 2016 during one of their gatherings in Chelmsford.

But what you really want to know is how this shot was taken, right.  Lets first look at the equipment used;

Equipment.
Camera: Nikon D750
Lens: Nikkor 24-120mm at 55mm
Lighting: Available light
hand held.

Camera Settings.
ISO 800 / f5.0 / 1/100 sec.

The Set Up.
The location for this meeting was a local pub, if memory serves me correctly it was called the Lamb?  But I may be mistaken.  Regardless, it was a pub, which had a great feel and character to it.  Whilst dark it had wonderful pockets of light coming in through the window, and it was this light that I utilised, save for the ambient light from the lamps in the background, which added nothing by way of lighting Mike.  The light pouring through the door window however struck both Mikes face and the bar brilliantly.

Editing Process.
There was very little in the way of editing for this photo.  I always shoot in colour and convert to black and white in post, so naturally this was carried out.  The moment I took this shot I knew there and then that this would be a black and white image.
The contrast was also adjusted to provide a little extra punch to the darks.
Other than that nothing else was altered.

Self Critique.
As I look back on this photo, on the whole I still like the way it was shot.  The one thing I may have possibly altered is the lack of light on the (camera) right side of Mike's face.  I possible would have had him turn ever so slightly into the light, just enough to add a bit more light to his eye.  Although, this pose was not staged.  All I asked was for Mike to stand at the bar by the pumps, and this was how he felt most natural.

Conclusion.
I hope you found this post useful.  I aim to share posts like this regularly, so if you found benefit in this, consider following me so you don't have to remember to check back as you'll be notified every time I post something new.

Until next time.
Gary.
