This installation and museum shop for ICA LA was an experiment in combining art and commerce, extending the museum experience into daily life, providing a space to linger and discover. Goods of enduring value served as reminders of ICA LA’s inaugural exhibition Martín Ramírez: His Life in Pictures, Another Interpretation. Ramírez’s method of layering and adhering found materials informed the concept for this immersive installation. The project also brought the work of a Mexican artist back to artisans in Mexico to serve as inspiration. The walls were covered in layers of newspaper, magazine pages, bookbinding cloth, and papel picado, and the ceiling was lit with traditional jícaras from Juchitán, Oaxaca.
