M O N O T Y P E S

Water images from internal sources are often present in my monotypes. They are deeply connected to my childhood growing up on the Great South Bay and summer weekends on the ocean beaches. Tidal ebb and flow marked time, changes of weather and light were dramatic there.

Landscape images reflect my interest in woods and open spaces in our environment. The somber tones evoke the sanctuary I felt these wooded spaces held for me as a child and my present concerns over their loss in our rural communities.

Using a brayer, I roll thin veils of oil paint on a plexiglas sheet until an image appears. As a result, the paintings acquire the luminous transparency of watercolor. A damp sheet of paper, a cover sheet and a soft blanket laid over the art, before the pile is run through the press. When the paper is peeled away from the plate, the original painting is destroyed, but the image has been transferred in reverse to the paper, creating a unique print.
