ZAZOO is a bilingual printed magazine (EN/ES) about swing culture in Europe, a re-emerged movement that has been growing non-stop for the last 10 years, widespread through countless festivals all around Europe. Specialized collaborators write about music and dance, both from the historical and current point of view, but with the implicit vocation of reflecting about many other themes – from literature to politics, including philosophy and gender studies– that make us re-think our own culture nowadays. And always taking the ludic and enthusiastic nature of swing as a base line.
Zazou was a term to describe french youngsters that, during the Occupation of France during the II World War, showed an attitude of resistance through their appreciation of jazz, their eccentric looks and detached attitude. This is why ZAZOO, a publication born in April 2018 with a vocation for continuity, proposes in its pages a reflexion about the value of collectivity and diversity in a contemporary european context. A magazine for people that may or may not dedicate themselves to music or dance, but are nevertheless inebriated by rhythm and improvisation in life. The spirit of swing is everywhere and it is crazy, it’s ZAZOO!
In this first number, entitled Resistant and Irresistible, you can find a historical vision about the arrival of Jazz in Europe in two phases, from the I World War to Paris in the 30s and the clandestinity of the zazou movement; american icons, with the huge figure of the dancer Frankie Manning and his rediscovery in Europe in the 80s; an interview with the hot jazz band Dizzy Birds, of various origins but based in Berlin and immersed in the spirit of New Orleans; a reportage with declarations about the debate around swing dance and gender roles; a portrait or human profile of manouche (gipsy jazz) artists and bands around the globe; a literary piece of free writing around the improvisation in art, or the art of improvisation; and even a playlist to accompany the lecture of the magazine or any other activity in which the protagonist is the tempo: fast, slow, or your own, but always with the aim of sharing it.

ZAZOO es una revista en papel y bilingüe (inglés-español) sobre cultura swing europea, movimiento que ha resurgido y crecido en los últimos años, y del que hoy día dan muestra incontables festivales en toda Europa. Firmas especializadas escriben de música y baile, tanto desde una perspectiva histórica como actual, pero con la vocación implícita de reflexionar sobre otros muchos temas –política, literatura, sociología, género…– que nos hagan repensar nuestra identidad cultural. Siempre, eso sí, tomando como punto de partida la visión lúdica y vitalista del swing.
Zazús fue el término con el que se nombró a un sector de la juventud que, durante la Ocupación de Francia en la II Guerra Mundial, mostró una actitud de resistencia a través de su apreciación del jazz y sus modos excéntricos de comportamiento. También ZAZOO, publicación que nace en Abril de 2018 con vocación de continuidad, propone en sus páginas una reflexión sobre el valor de lo colectivo y de la diversidad en el contexto europeo contemporáneo. Una revista para aquellas personas que, se dediquen o no a la música o al baile, se encuentran embriagadas por el ritmo y la improvisación en la vida. El espíritu swing está en todas partes y es así de loco, es ZAZOO!
En este número 1, titulado Resistente e irresistible, se dan cita textos de visión histórica, en torno a la llegada del jazz a Europa en dos fases, la I Guerra Mundial y el París de los años 30 que se prolongó en la clandestinidad del movimiento zazú; iconos americanos, con la enorme figura del bailarín Frankie Manning y su redescubrimiento en la Europa de finales de los 80; entrevista a la banda de hot jazz Dizzy Birds, de procedencia dispar, asentada en Berlín e imbuida del espíritu de Nueva Orleans; reportaje con declaraciones sobre el debate en torno a los bailes swing y los roles de género; retrato o perfil humano de los artistas y bandas manouche (el jazz gitano) a lo largo y ancho del continente; pieza literaria de escritura libre en torno a la improvisación en el arte, al arte de la improvisación; y hasta una lista de reproducción para acompañar a la lectura de la revista o de cualesquiera otras actividades en las que el protagonista sea el tiempo: rápido, lento o a su ritmo, pero siempre con el ánimo de ser compartido.
