Winter Olympics Icon Design and Applications

I was assigned to create a sequence of icons for the Winter Olympics. They didn't necessarily have to be for the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, but I had to choose a specific winter sport for the 6+ icons. I selected figure skating. Essentially, they also had to be applicable as emojis in text.
I struggled at first on what direction to take this project in. While looking at a book of sixties design, I took inspiration from the spherical forms I noticed were prevalent not just in print media but also in furniture. I utilized circles to create motion, like those of a figure skater, and unity in the icon set.

For this project, I also had to design small and large applications. For my small application, I designed a bandana using my icons to create a border and pattern.
I made street banners for my large application, and utilized layering and cropping.
Here are some of my original sketches. I originally toyed with the idea of making some tongue-in-cheek Facebook stickers, but drifted away from this idea to make more design-oriented icons rather than illustrative ones.
