Illustrated Artist Portraits

Here's is my latest series of illustrated portraits. This project started as a on going commissioned portrait series for a art bar in Colorado. I enjoyed it so much I think I will keep adding to the series. It gives me the opportunity to research and illustrate my art heroes.

Debra Styer, "Vincent's Starry Night", 2017

watercolor and gouache

"If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced."

Vincent Van Gogh

My illustrated ode to Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890). Van Gogh has always been a hero of mine. He inspired me to keep working as a artist even though the difficult times when I doubted myself. Vincent's passion shines through his work as well as his darkness encased his painted canvases.

Debra Styer, "Frida and her Monkey", 2017

watercolor and gouache

"I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best."

Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo has always been one of my artistic heroes. Here strength and sadness fills all of your painting and connects the viewer to her heart. I also love her out spoken and feminist ways.

Debra Styer, "The Persistence of Dali", 2017
watercolor and gouache

"Drawing is the honesty of the art. There is no possibility of cheating. It is either good or bad."

Salvador Dali

My illustrated ode to the fabulous Spanish Surrealist artist Salvador Dali (1904-1989). Salvador Dali flipped the art world on his head and forced us to look at the universe in a whole different way.

Who should I illustrate next?
