Sea Is as Tranquil as A Clock Stopped Swinging|海灘像停擺的鐘一樣寧靜
In his poetry collection Sea Is as Tranquil as A Clock Stopped Swinging*(海灘像停擺的鐘一樣寧靜) featuring selected works created between 2011 and the Umbrella Movement in 2014, the Hongkongese poet Xi Cao(西草) probes into his family, history and Hongkongese society by taking perspectives of various dimensions of everyday life and constructing the poems through an unique structure combining tarot with Buddshist sutra.
Inspired by the title, the “concept of sea” together with its stillness and dynamics were set as keys to drive the design process. The “sea” is visually and tangibly presented by the faintly hand drawn, blue background printed on wave grain textured paper, which aims to imply the stillness/fluxion of sea. As a metaphor of life, the seemingly intact, darkish circle symbolizes the individual, societal and political struggles concealed by the presentation of contemporary everyday life.
