McElenney Family Crest

Introduction: In Graphic Design class, we have discussed how important creating logos are, but the most important hint is that they have meaning behind them. We have discussed about many things including good and bad logos, a good logo for example is target because the it is the name of the company, but also the logo. The logo is extremely important because it is what people think of when they think of the brand. There is a very deep history about crests dating back to medieval europe and possibly even before that.  Crests have become extremely important because the can attract a lot of attention, bring more customers to your brand. There are many brands that are known mostly because their logos are so intriguing. The process that we went through to know what we wanted on our crests was to first, interview and research our families and find the main components to represent on the crest. The we learned how to use adobe illustrator. After we learned how to use adobe illustrator, we were assigned partners to guide each other through Adobe Illustrator. In this assignment we are responsible for creating a family crest the entails all of our family’s traits.

The first step of the family crest project was to interview relatives, such as grandparents and parents about the history of the family. I discussed this with my grandmother and my parents. We discussed our interests, history, what we love, what we hate, what we are passionate about, and much more. We cam up with list of things that represent our family and we are proud of these things. I have a few logos on my crest such as the Los Angeles logos, Arizona logos, and faith logos. This is where we based our discussion on and we branched off from these original ideas

The next procedure for this project was to find inspiration. Projects that can inspire me to use different designs and possibly find certain aspects of professional, well done crests ad use certain aspects that I like. I found these on Behance and they really guided my ideas towards what I created. Ekaterina Galuzina is an artist on Bechance and I find their work very intriguing and I used certain aspects from their designs.

The next phase of this project was sketching. Sketching possible ideas that I could create my family crest. Using the list that my family and I have created, I made several sketches that originally came to me. I used my knowledge of my family an drawing to create these sketches.

This is my workspace where I worked on my crest. I had many ideas and shapes what I wanted to try out these shapes and how they worked together. There are many types of possible designs that I could do and use for my project.

Pitch: This is my design, it includes everything that my family and I talked about in some way. First I have a cactus which represents that most of my entire family lives in Arizona. The writing of AZ is special because it describes what how my sister is very interested in writing at ASU. No the mountains are because we enjoy living and Arizona and we often go hiking. The Notre Dame symbol represents my brother because he goes there, but is more of a family icon because we al root for Notre Dame because of our Irish decent. The cross represents our faith and how we are together. Finally, the skyline of Los Angeles. This means a lot because both of my parents grew up in Los Angeles and we went there a lot for my dads work. California is a place that we love and it is only special with family. This crest represents my family and what we love and I think it would truly be a good crest to have for our family.
