The Blind Bear : A Visual Essay

The  Blind Bear by Rebecca LaFond, is a story that reflects a relationship between a father and daughter. The story takes the  reader through childhood memories to present day, to unravel how her relationship with her father diminished and then grew.  Likewise, this visual essay seeks to illustrate this strong relationship dynamic with a textural and typographical approach. This is  achieved through emphasizing certain quotes and words and breaking the grid, in order to enhance the emotion and metaphor of the bear. At times when the grid is most broken, the story is taking the audience through a rougher patch. Typography was chosen based on its handmade characteristics, in light of mimicking the ‘diary entry’ tone of the story. Textures that replicate water, smoke, and fur were chosen to symbolize the sensory qualities of the story.  A purple colour palette enhances the story with its inviting and mystical, yet dark and dreary connotations. As in Indigenous culture, a bear is symbol of family or even a person who has passed onto a new life, this visual essay is a way of learning of the symbolism within Indigenous culture.
