Gamperaliya (Village revolution)

This was a photo shoot carried  out for the
 “Brides Of Sri Lanka Magazine”.
The acclaimed  Sri Lankan novel ‘Gamperaliya’ (The Transformation of a Village), written by famous Sri Lankan writer  Martin Wickremasinghe was the source of inspiration for this photo shoot. It was first published in 1944. And later made in to a movie directed by Dr. Lester James Peries.

The book depicts the breakup of traditional village life due to the impact of modernisation. The gradual subversion of the traditional economic and social structure of the village by the commercial culture of the city is portrayed through the story of an aristocratic family in a southern village. The novel which has made its mark in Sri Lankan literature and highly praised, portrays the complicated love story of a couple who struggles to overcome their class barrier. While the girl is forced to marry into a loveless arranged marriage by her aristocratic family, the boy leaves to the city in hope of bettering himself. He returns upon the death of her husband to re-ignite old flames.
We managed to grasp the essence of this modernization and sculpted it into the details of the entire set - from models to outfits and backdrops to filters, capturing a bygone era in a context appealing to the modern critique.
