Still Life – ART102

Prompt: Take a picture of a still life and turn it into a painting while using different hues but still the same values. Pay attention to composition, value matching, blending, and technical abilities.

Tools used: pencils; illustration board, acrylic paint.

Below is the sketch and final product of the still life I chose. I decided to do something involving nature, as I absolutely love painting landscapes and scenery. On the left, I sketched out the composition of the photograph, marking down numbers that represented values (1 being the lightest, 6 being the darkest).

Once I had finished my sketch, I began using it as a reference and then decided what color palette would best match the values that were present in the photograph. I decided to use a tri-colored palette of red, yellow, and blue, as I feel primary colors not only stand beautifully together by themselves, but the neutrals they can create allow for a multitude of colors (purples, oranges, greens, browns, etc).
