The Cell is a mechanism that conditions my movements. With time and habit, this mechanism will become my comfort… The project’s necessity springs from the constraints imposed…by an aesthetic universe wherein things are standardized, average… I would like to make these Cells my homes, where I define my sensations, cultivate my behaviours. These homes will be a means of resistance to a society that keeps me from becoming what I must become.
Absalon, Cellules, 1993
The cell as a concept refers to the complex of Cyclades; small islands with a unique geomorphology, in the Mediterranean sea. They are known for their white-painted houses, the barren landscapes whipped by the winds and bathed in the glare of the Aegean, the presence of secluded monasteries and the difficulty in accessing them, especially during the winter months. Within this landscape, we choose to integrate the excerpts taken by the Absalon cells, as an attempt to create a dialogue between two different states of absence. For us, each island functions as a potential landing site for the excerpts.

Far from the urban landscape, new cells get integrated with the nature, creating a new living condition,  new hybrid spaces. We see them drowning in recesses of the rocks, creeping into the caves and the seaside, protruding to the top of the hills; either as enclosed shells or as observatories. Their new terrain is a challenge to the living space. New micro-locations are created having as a common characteristic the isolation and the very narrow anthropometry. This leads to the production of a new meaning for their potential user, who is often called, under certain circumstances, to appropriate them and reconsider his needs and habits.

In this study, the widespread installation of the new fragment-cells in different spatial reliefs at the island of Tinos and their connection through a proposed route, creates new atmospheric and physical qualities, redefining in this way the experience of the stroller, the traveler, the wanderer.
