I was chosen to be the costume department director of a Cultural Musical Project, GAYA 2018 : MERAKI which is produced and directed by SMU's (Singapore Management University) organization, SMUKI (Singapore Management University Komunitas Indonesia). Since 2015, GAYA (Gelar Budaya) has been an annual musical production by SMUKI, showcasing the rich and multi-faceted culture of Indonesia in Singapore. This is my second time joining the production, in GAYA 2017 I was one of the costume department member.
My job scope in this project includes leading the whole costumes department team through the whole process from conceptualizing, researching, designing, sourcing and producing all the costumes for the whole production. I was the stylist for the video and photo teaser shoot and I was also the wardrobe backstage crew for all the rehearsals and D-day of the play. Therefore, I also did stage management, make-up, hairdo, styling and quick change for the production. I worked with a fellow co-director and 8 other members throughout the whole process.
GAYA 2018 : MERAKI Synopsis
GAYA 2018 : MERAKI entails the historical trials and tribulations of an Acehnese heroine, CUT NYAK DHIEN. Her journey towards becoming a warrior embodies themes of war, love and womanhood amidst the tumultuous times under Dutch colonial rule. In this interpretation, we follow through the life account of DHIEN from the destruction of her family to the destruction of the very values that she holds dear, cumulating to the faithful choice between her own happiness, or that of her motherland.
