Nybyggerne

2010 - Made for Nybyggerne i Ridehuset in colaboration with Mikkeline Daa Natorp.

TV and video installation.

For a project about Aarhus we wanted to show how people watch television. Over the course of two weeks, we made eight shortfilms, collected and hung seventeen televisions like grapes in a twelve meter wire just above the ground. Made them shuffle between showing the films, showing white noise and turning on and off.

Watching television
The subject was to make an installation about Aarhus. We decided to do an installation about how people watch television. The idea came to us after brainstorming in the evening looking out over Aarhus. From the window we could see 20+ televisions running with the characteristic flickering light.

The installation
We decided to make eight 30-60 minutes films with people watching television with the images superimposed on them selves. These were randomly shown on 17 televisions hung from a ceiling crane. We timed them to turn on and off to make installation a living breathing thing.

Hard work
We had to figure out how to hang the televisions, make them stay on when they didn't recieve a signal, how to hook them up the DVD-machines which had to be over 30 meters away. How to turn them on and off automatically. How to make them auto run the DVDs. Record and edit eight 30-60 minute films. All within a budget of 2.500 DKR and only 14 days. Thanks to everyone who donated their television.
