The New New World Portraits

Photography
“Amerigo Vespucci brought us this far, our destiny is to go beyond!” Ferdinando Magellano, 1520

The New New World asks the question: “If the original portraits were painted today, who would be the subjects...who contributes the most value and enrichment to Florence.”

Taking inspiration from a series of famous portraits from Florentine museums, by means of strong visual impact, Abouzeid created portraits in the classic iconography of the renaissance artists using as models representatives of numerous diverse cultures.

Figures of vital importance to Florentine History are reinterpreted photographically maintaining unchanged the style and feel of the original painting with the photographic subject chosen from the different ethnic groups for their contribution to modern Florence. The objective is to span the Florentine culture from its greatest moment of splendor to the current Cultural Revolution thanks in large part to cultural integration and immigrants.

The final works used only limited post production to correct contrasts and color fidelity.  The originals work and modern twin are considered one work comprised of two canvases.  The collection comprises 10 works (20 canvases).  One of five collections.
