Compressive image process

Role
Research needs and existing methods, and evaluate options; design process for in-house team, test, and educate designers; adapt process for other departments and external contributors without professional authoring tools

Goals
Address asset performance and site evolution/development barriers stemming from fixed-size raster images.
Reduce load time and increase asset flexibility for rapidly-changing and diverse range of screen sizes.
Simplify asset creation for a large enterprise site with over 1 million pages.
The site is too large and staff too small to art direct each image.

Solution
I formulated new image specifications and compression guidelines to trim file weights, foster asset re-use across the site, and leverage existing software. I researched dozens of tools and participated in negotiations and requirements discovery for new tool implementation. Designed the process for existing-asset remediation, and modified the process for self-serve assets created in other departments.

Results
The resulting work contributed to page load time reduction of 2 seconds worldwide and 5 seconds in China.
