Coir: Diagnostic Study - 2017.

Coir is a natural, eco-friendly and exceptionally tensile fibre, extracted from the fibrous husk of coconut shell. Indian Coir industry is an important cottage industry, contributing significantly to the economy of major coconut growing coastal areas, like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Odisha and Assam. Coir from Sindhudurg, a district located in Maharashtra, has grown because of the high amount of coconut production, which has led to an abundance in raw material for the same. Currently it has evolved into a symbiotic relationship between the industry and the craft. This study is an outcome of a detailed research done by us. We did a one-week visit to the district and collected primary information regarding the same from the various Coir processing units and concerned craftsman.
We have documented the versatility of Coir as a material and as a medium of employment.
Coir isn’t a dying craft but a growing industry.
