Florian Leibert's profile

Mesosphere’s Flexibility and Cost Savings in Data

As the CEO of Mesosphere, Inc., Florian (“Flo”) Leibert guides a Silicon Valley company that he cofounded in 2013 and is on track to attain revenue of $50 million through its container-based Data Center Operating System (DC/OS) solutions. Featured in a Business Insider article in November 2017, Florian Leibert’s company was described as one that has the unique ability to operate on any group of servers.

This allows data center applications to be incrementally shifted to the cloud, and from one cloud to another, in virtually any combination. The result is a flexibility and cost savings unheard of in static offerings such as those provided by Amazon Web Services. Existing hardware can be utilized for maximum performance, instead of the more expensive alternative of using major cloud providers or purchasing more servers.

At the same time, Mesosphere simplifies the process of introducing new data-center software such as the Spark data-analysis platform, the Cassandra database, and the TensorFlow artificial intelligence framework from Google. Rollout processes that previously took weeks and months are now simplified to the point where they are similar to installing a smart device app.

With Mesosphere’s platform, customers can also easily operate and deploy containers, which are employed in creating and managing large-scale applications. Mr. Leibert does caution against Mesosphere being perceived as simply a container company, like Docker. This is because container technology is becoming “commonplace and commoditized” to a point where there will soon be minimal profits in the technology.
