Beware the ides of March

I never knew what this meant, and I still don't - something about pagans feasting and drinking and beating up old men....
Later, Julius Caesar was assassinated on the ides of March, but what does any of that mean?
I am neither pagan nor roman, and as a kid I always thought the saying was Beware the eyes of March!
Thanks for stopping by! :-)
