landmarks virtual viewer london

lvvl is a proposal for an apparatus placed in close proximity to London’s bridges. It resembles a common urban binocular but there is a surprise in store for the eager viewer. Instead of magnified views of the landmark lvvl creates distorting images of it. Through lvvl Tower bridge becomes a ballerina or two monsters two monsters fighting with their mouths open. Millenium Bridge
a black spider’s web that entraps pedestrians or the vertebral column of a huge dinosaur and Kew Railway Bridge cannot stop crying. The variety of images produced can be endless. The images change with the click of a button.

lvvl may seem simply funny, yet there’s more to it that meets the eye!
Every distorted image is accompanied by interesting facts regarding each bridge. The information is received through the use of QR codes embedded in the apparatus. When Tower Bridge becomes a ballerina the viewer is linked to information about the bridge’s structural system and the engines that make the bascules move. When it becomes a monster’s fight the information is about historical facts such as wars and battles that took place in the area.

lvvl aims at encouraging an alternative and more creative view of the world. We are constantly surrounded by information but how often do we stop to consider the true purpose of things? If we managed to replace look and watch with observe, our daily routine would acquire new meaning and then maybe we could discover a secret world and allow it to come into the picture.
Just use your imagination and let lvvl lead you to paths you have never visited before!
lvvl_diy

lvvl_diy is the interactive part of the project. It encourages visitors of the exhibition as well as instagram users to contribute to the project with their imagination. People are asked to draw their version of Tower Bridge and then upload it on instagram using the hashtag #lvvl_diy. The reward comes in the form of a direct message containing a virtual fortune cookie.
lvvl_diy is an educational tool which triggers the imagination. It encourages viewers to see the world from a different perspective and challenges them to unleash their creative thinking.
lvvl was designed for Speculative Spaces, a collaborative project between graphic and interior designers based in London and Thessaloniki respectively. The project aimed to explore the significance of water in the urban landscape of the two cities.
It was presented in Middlesex University on February 2017
