SELF PORTRAIT
As evidenced in many of my charcoal portraits, I tend to create work that is very process heavy, valuing the time spent in experimentation more than the final result. I spent three weeks on “SELF PORTRAIT,” as this drawing became my “punch bag” drawing — that is, a canvas for total freedom to test out techniques, here with charcoal, white chalk pastel, and kneaded eraser. Because of the size of the drawing, I used a ladder to reach the upper parts of it, as well as a mirror to draw from my own live body. In the course of all the additions and removals, I ended up manifesting something completely new, an essence that was not evident in my own original self image.
