The Empireof Dommel and Aa is located inthe Brainport area betweenEindhoven and Helmond in the Netherlands. The Brainport is an area where aunique blend of knowledge and innovation come together. Big internationalcompany’s and educational institutions like Philips, ASML, Tom Tom, IBM, Intel, the Design Academy and the Technical University Eindhoven are located in the Brainport. The Empire of Dommeland Aa becomes a robust regional landscape park. The inhabitants ofthe Brainport area get an attractive landscaped environment for recreation in a natural context. The area of the Dommel and Aa valley isnot approached as a landscape from which theedges are slowly being eaten bythe city, but the landscape itselfis seen as a challenge: a robust regional park. The landscape will not be the product of all thered and green projects. The landscape between Eindhoven and Helmond will be developed as a landscape with lots of nature, but alsowith leisure facilities. It is also thelandscape where Vincent van Gogh lived and worked, a tourist-recreationalattractive idea. Fromthis concept you can imagine how this landscapefor humans and animals should ideallyfunction. Important theme’s are: accessibilityby car bike and foot, the planning of visitor intensive and extensive area’s, the recreationalfacilities, ecological connections, the design of residential areas in thelandscape, and the development of ecological qualities inconjunction with recreational qualities.The design research of this project leads to a masterplan for the area.A landscape of river valley’s, swamplands, agricultural fields, heath and woodland areas isthe fundament of this masterplan. The aim is to do future developments with more focus on thelandscape and to ensure a good integration of differentprojects and landscape.
