Gréibhlí – IMRAM 2011

This project was part of IMRAM 2011 exhibition.

Alan Titley’s poem Gréibhlí describes the contents of an eight year old boys pockets. Inside we can find many interesting objects, sometimes childish such as a sausage of plasticine, sometimes disgusting—his dad’s old tooth, armpit hair or dried snot, however, above all, they tell a story of adventures of a lively boy. Although just objects, they are full of humour and joy.

The author then contrasts the child’s pocket with the contents of his own pocket ten year later—money, credit cards and a condom. This draws a contrast between the carefree life of a child and the sometimes mundane realities of adulthood.

In this poem Titley suggests that some of us lose the child inside us as we grow up and as a result lose a bit of ourselves. The adventurous and fun side of the protagonist seems to be disappear as we get the insight of his pocket when he’s older.

The poem uses very descriptive words, that I felt were quite quirky and vivid, which led to me my approach.

For my exhibition piece I decided to design an audio-visual piece which would hopefully capture the true essence of this poem and represent the contrast between our childhood and adulthood.

The video is divided into two parts, just like the poem.
The child part is bright, colourful, fun and quite childful at times. It is accompanied by audio of children playing. Half way through the sound of sea signifies the slow change. The adult part is dark, bleak and boring as their is no life or story behind the contents of his pocket. It is accompanied by audio of the city sounds.
All of this is represented through the medium of Kinetic typography. In keeping with the simplistic and succinct language used in the poem I’ve kept the design minimalist so as to best reflect the poems light tone.
