NEZ PEZ's profile

PEZ PUSHING (Ljubljana)

Pez Pushing is a project that deals with urban exploration through pushing a skateboard around the city which produces a sound and visual landscape.

The skateboard is transformed into an improvised instrument using a magnetic pick up and bass strings on the bottom of the skateboard. It resembles an electrical guitar as it collects different sounds while it is being pushed around the city streets. It functions as a medium through which the vibrations of strings and other location sounds compose a sound spectrum of a path through a city. A simple gesture as pushing a skateboard represents an element of urban exploration, searching for diverse situations and coincidences that characterizes artist’s impression of the city and local identities. The final outcome of the project is a sound and/or video recording, using only gathered field recordings, that express a mixture of skateboard sounds, guitar sounds and sounds of the urban surroundings; e.a traffic, people... and is telling a story of the city. The visual recording displays the city and it includes the exploration of city social structure, urban infrastructure, occupation and access to public space etc.

this is an ongoing project that collects a series of different experiences in different cities and occurrences.

depending on the specifics of the project in a setting of a residency, workshop or exhibition i also like to develop the project into a communal experience, where i collaborate with different creative spectrum of the local possibilities like musicians and visual artists to work with the gathered audio and visual material, or to prepare and co-create an event for the projection of the video . The venue is then presented as a site specific layout with urban furniture, connected with skateboard culture.

I take the opportunity of producing this project to ask questions about the usage of public space, researching living situations, focusing on moving through degraded areas and social structures of a city. I am trying to round up experience and the feel of a city by defining a specificity of sound, but also by connecting with different creative outlets and people from different social backgrounds. I strive by improving the project with evolving the instrument with adding guitar pedals and other sound distortion devices and practices of exploration.

I wish to maintain the project in the frame of DIY or DIWO practice, which also deals with the notion of working together within a society that is increasingly individualized. I wish to get people together and exchange knowledge of producing DIY instruments and working on skate-able objects that can be put in public spaces by recycling street objects.

This project was first presented in Cirkulacija2, Ljubljana, Slovenija on 31.October 2017.

On the evening of the video presentation there was also a DIY skate polygon constructed with local skaters Matej Počervina and Jan Robek.
The concert for finissage was played by Haiku Garden.
