As the primary purpose of a museum is education, the Emplace bench tries to educate the audiences by providing a unique and immersive product interaction. With a photo stand the bench invites audiences to take a group picture to create “insta-moment” that mimic the historical photo of The “Four Desperados”, more importantly, this interaction invites the audience to place themselves in history, imagining as if they are the historical figures one day in future. Moreover, each unit of the bench carries the character of the “Four Desperados”, as such encouraging the audience to be curious about their story. Are you ready to travel in time with the Emplace?

If you were them, today, the subjects of the photo, four bandits, depict different roles in society that nowadays are still present The warmonger, the Revolutionary, the Powerful, the Intellectual and the Family man.
The seats on the bench represent the different characters. If you would crawl into the skin of your character, living in nowadays society.

Benches used in museum usually affords to sit and rest only. A group of design students from PolyU Design makes six museum seats and explores alternative visitor's experience to enable learning of the historical contexts promoted at the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum. Play, interactive tangible and visual experience is prototyped and installed at different locations.
This project is realized through the collaboration with Leisure and Cultural Services Department and some of the key wooden structures are upcycled from 50 years old chairs donated by Shun Hing Restaurant, the 80-year-old restaurant closed down in late 2016.
