 Commission for a Personal Logo
The client came to me with an idea for his personal stationary. He wanted a logo to reflect his family so armed with information and a direction that included his Greek and Australian heritage this is what I came up with. The smaller black ink logo was used for the stationary but the full scale colour version was then sent to the client for his personal use. Therefore this was a totally traditional project with no digital elements.
Initial sketches and ideas
for a while the client and I deliberated about using peacocks instead of a platypus
The final concept after inking. The flower in the left box is a stylised version of the Warratah flower from Australia and the wavy lines symobolise the ocean, which is important as both Australia and Greece are islands.
Started with the little owl first...here are the bits of masking fluid I used to give definition and white areas...
The finished owl...
after both the owl and the platypus were finished I started on the olives. Went with black olives as in Greece, green ones signify immaturity.
working on the leaves...I love those brushes with the water inside them.
Adding darker tones.
Keeping the ribbon/scroll simpler as there is already a lot going on in the design.
My workspace...
Went with blue lines for the sea as black would have been a bit too overpowering. Tying in the tones from the owl and platypus with a gold/ochre border.
for the boat I wanted to pick out some of the red used in the olives.
The final colour version...until...
Decided to risk a little bit of gold acrylic for the border. I applied it thinly so that it still showed the tones from the water-colour beneath. It worked really well and was more subtle than using a foil.
These are the smaller versions for the use on the stationary. The one chosen was the bottom left, however I played with more depth of tones on photoshop using elements of the colour logo made black and white.
