Enamel -making originated more than 2000 years ago and over the years of the long existence it has accumulated a rich technological experience and developed a variety of comlecated technical devices. As meterial for enriching the colour of decorations on metal,enamel is a glass-like substance stained by metal oxides into different colours:red,yellow, green,black, blue and white.It is this rich palette that so attracts artists-enamelers.In order to turn enamel into a means of expressing an artist's intentions,into a means of aborning metal with colourful decoration,a special technology has to be used to achive a durable fusion of metal and enamel,the two separate materials.For this purpose pulverized enamel is applied to the surface of the metal and heated at 700-900º С. With respect to chemical composition,enamel can be transparent,non-transparent(opaque),fondant(colourless,transparent)or opal (translucent).
Another important feature of "decorative enamel"are the techniques which not only enable metal to be aborned with colour but which also provide the possibility of painting and designing with enamel.This, in turn ,gives the freedom of combining colourful richness with the jewelry techniques of processing metal for decorative purposes .
