What is called Truth
Long before click-baiting and the internet, there existed fake and exaggerated news. In the 19th century, the term “yellow journalism” was coined to refer to wildly exaggerated and sensationalist news stories. These made-up stories were attention-grabbing but provided very few actual facts. In the 21st century, also dubbed the “Post-Truth” era, similar types of fake eye-grabbing news exist across the Internet. I designed a website to inform people about the history of Yellow Journalism in comparison to the current Post-Truth era. Targeting a Chinese audience, I chose real titles of fake and exaggerated news chosen from the Chinese internet. Using dazzling fluorescent colors, I demonstrate how websites use flashy imagery over substance to attract the viewer’s attention.
