This bird is present throughout Chile; subspecies australis is the largest found from the Region of Aysen to Tierra del Fuego. This reference is from the male bird chilensis: Gray head with 3 black lines on each side that start from the base of the beak towards the nape. One at the height of the crown, another in the line of the eyes and the third in the line of the lower jaw. Crown feathers raised as a pompadour. Whitish throat. Great rufa stain that surrounds the neck except in the dividing line between the throat and chest. Earthy light brown chest. Whitening abdomen. Mantle and brown back with black longitudinal lines. Brown tail.
