HAPPY CANCER
self-authored and illustrated book
When I was 18, a senior in high school, I spotted a tumor in my leg. It was huge. I called it “my tumor” to my friends—that is, until my mom heard me joking about it. Of course, she took me to the doctor and it all became very real, really fast.

My family and friends, teachers and peers helped me through the following 12 months of chemotherapy, surgery, radiation and blood tests by keeping my spirits high and my mind busy! I was lucky to have such a strong support system, one that tried to make me smile when I really didn’t want to.

I wrote and designed this book to document my experience and to fill a void. When I was going through chemo, I couldn’t find one book that simply used humor to cope. It was always faith and science, never jokes that people suggested.
