Skape Public Art Pocket Map

SCAPE Public Art installs free-to-view contemporary public art in Christchurch city. I was commissioned to design a guide and time table of events for the 2015 Scape public art event.

I collaborated with the marketing director at Skape to gain a more in-depth understanding of the project requirements. Following these consultations it became clear that the director required an enormous amount of information on a relatively limited amount of space. Working with these requirements I was able to conceptualise an end product which I in turn sourced from a printer in Auckland. I worked with the printers key-line to create a pocket map of Christchurch that would guide walkers around the city while educating them about all the artists and artworks on display throughout the duration of the event. The design incorporated a key system that allowed users to identify & link information with a location on the map. I considered a typographic treatment to work with the small space & fold out design that was both easy and enjoyable to read.

Christchurch City had only very recently re-opened to the public after the 2010 earthquake that caused severe damage to the cities infrastructure including street signage, roadways and footpaths. It is very easy to get lost in a city that is undergoing a massive rebuild with dangerous construction sites around every corner. We needed to help visitors navigate the city effectively and safely.
